Customize Windows 8 Logon, Logoff & Unlock Sound Events

Windows 8 comes with many new features but there are many features missing from the previous windows 7. Some of the basic missing features in Windows 8 which are distinctly visible are the absence of Start menu, visual Aero feature, Windows Media Center, standard notifications and Windows Logon/ Logoff sounds.

Among these missing features, we have already covered how to get back Start Menu in Windows 8 and enable Glass Aero feature in Windows 8. The Aero Feature alternative is not that satisfactory but atleast we have something. Windows Media Center can be availed free of cost for a limited time. With this method we were also able to Activate Windows 8 Permanently.

Now let’s deal with the missing sounds.

Actually for a good news Microsoft has not removed Logon/ Logoff/ Unlock sound events completely. Its just removed from your sound control panel and can be easily unlocked by a little registry tweaking.
Unlocking Logon/ Logoff/ Unlock Sound Events

Press Win key + R to bring up the Run Dialog box. Type regedit and press Enter.

Run dialog box Customize Windows 8 Logon, Logoff & Unlock Sound Events
As the Registry Editor opens, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels
In EventLabels you will find many options, scroll down and find Windows Logon, logoff, Unlock options. Select the one for which you want to get sound options in Sound Control panel.
Enable sound events in windows 8 Customize Windows 8 Logon, Logoff & Unlock Sound Events
    • After selecting your option, you can see ExcludeFromCPL on the right with a default value 1. Double Click on it and change the value from 1 to 0. click on ok.
Edit ExcludeFromCPL Value Customize Windows 8 Logon, Logoff & Unlock Sound Events
  • You can repeat the same procedure for the sound events you want to enable. Once you are done close the Registry Editor. Open the Sounds Control Panel, the unlocked sound events will be present there.
Windows 8 Logon Sounds Enabled Customize Windows 8 Logon, Logoff & Unlock Sound Events
That’s all you need to do for unlocking Logon, Logoff and Unlock sound events. there is no risk in editing in this category i.e in the Events Labels. If you feel you have done something wrong, just change the values of ExcludeFromCPL. 0 means not excludes whereas 1 denotes that its excluded from Sound Control panel.

Allow Remote Control To Your Desktop On Ubuntu

Enabling remote desktop mode is extremely easy on Ubuntu since Dapper. You can allow other users to access your desktop using the VNC Viewer utility that is bundled with Ubuntu, or offered as a free download for Windows.
Note that enabling remote control of your desktop is never a safe thing to do unless you have a firewall installed and configured correctly, and even then is still a potential security problem. Now that you’ve been warned of the risks, let’s move on.
Navigate to the System \ Preferences \ Remote Desktop on the Gnome top menu.
You’ll see this window:

The first two checkboxes need to be checked in order for remote desktop to be enabled.
The Security section is important: If you select the “Ask you for confirmation” code, then you will need to be at the computer in order to allow the other person to access your desktop. If you are trying to remotely access one of your own computers, you will want to uncheck this box.
The second checkbox should always be checked, and you should enter a secure password. You will be prompted for this password when you try to log on.

Replacing the Windows XP Bootloader with Windows 7

If you’ve managed to install XP on the same PC that you already had Windows 7 on, you’ll noticed that you can’t boot into Windows 7 anymore. You can use this command to fix that and restore the Windows 7 bootloader:
bootsect /nt60 all
Depending on the partition that you’ve installed, you might need to substitute the drive letter instead of “all”.
image
Note: if you want to restore Windows XP back to the menu, you can open up a command prompt in Windows 7 and run this command:
bcdedit /create {ntldr} -d “Windows XP”
image

Using the Automated Startup Repair

Of course, all this command-line stuff is probably not necessary in most cases. You can usually just use the Startup Repair option from the Recovery menu…
image
It’ll check for problems and probably fix them. If not, then you can always use the command prompt.
image
Have you ever needed to restore your boot loader to get Windows working again?

How to Manually Repair Windows 7 Boot Loader Problems

The first thing you’ll need to do is boot off the install disc, and then click through until you see the “Repair your computer” link in the lower left-hand corner.

You’ll need to choose the correct installation of Windows and then click the Next button.

And then you’ll get to the System Recovery Options screen, where you can get to the Command Prompt.

Repairing the Master Boot Record

If you want to restore the master boot record, you can simply type in the following command:
bootrec /fixmbr
You can also write a new boot sector onto the system partition with this command (which is often more useful):
bootrec /fixboot
And of course, if you just use bootrec /? you’ll be able to see all the options.
